1. Fitness & Physical Preparation
  • These treks vary in difficulty, requiring moderate to high fitness levels.

  • Training should include:

    • Cardio (running, cycling, hiking)

    • Strength training (leg endurance, core stability)

    • Stair climbing and uphill hiking with a weighted backpack.

  • Altitude acclimatization is necessary for Mt. Wilhelm (4,509m) and Mt. Giluwe (4,367m).

2. Permits & Fees
  • Kokoda Trek Permit: Issued by the Kokoda Track Authority (KTA).

  • Mt. Wilhelm & Mt. Giluwe Permits: Local landowners require access fees.

  • Mt. Tavurvur: Entry fees may apply depending on access routes.

  • These permits are often included in guided tours.

3. Travel & Visa Requirements
  • PNG Visa: Required for international travelers (apply online or on arrival).

  • Domestic Travel:

    • Kokoda Track: Fly to Port Moresby → Charter to Kokoda or Owers’ Corner.

    • Mt. Wilhelm: Fly to Mt. Hagen → Drive to Kundiawa, Chimbu Province.

    • Mt. Giluwe: Fly to Mt. Hagen → Travel to Tambul for the starting point.

    • Mt. Tavurvur: Fly to Rabaul (Tokua Airport) → Drive to the base.

  • Travel Insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is highly recommended.

4. Packing & Gear

Essential Equipment

  • Hiking Backpack (50-70L).

  • Hiking Boots (waterproof, ankle support).

  • Weatherproof clothing (rain jacket, thermal layers, gloves).

  • Sleeping Bag & Mat (if camping).

  • Trekking Poles (for steep or rocky areas).

  • Headlamp & Extra Batteries.

  • Sunscreen, Hat, Sunglasses (for high-altitude treks).

  • Insect Repellent (for Kokoda & Tavurvur due to mosquitoes).

Hydration & Nutrition

  • Hydration pack (2-3L capacity).

  • Water purification tablets or filter.

  • Energy snacks (trail mix, protein bars, electrolyte powders).

5. Guides & Porters
  • Highly recommended for all major treks.

  • Guides provide navigation, cultural insights, and safety support.

  • Porters can carry heavy loads, allowing trekkers to focus on endurance.

6. Health & Safety
  • Vaccinations: Recommended for malaria, typhoid, hepatitis A/B, tetanus.

  • Altitude Sickness: Risk increases above 3,000m (Mt. Wilhelm, Mt. Giluwe).

    • Acclimatization is key—climb gradually and stay hydrated.

  • First Aid Kit: Carry blister treatment, painkillers, rehydration salts.

  • Volcanic Safety (Mt. Tavurvur):

    • Monitor volcanic activity reports.

    • Wear a mask or scarf in case of ash clouds.

    • Stay on marked paths to avoid unstable ground.

7. Best Time to Trek
  • Dry season (April – October): Ideal for all treks.

  • Wet season (November – March): Slippery, dangerous, and more challenging.

8. Cultural Sensitivity
  • Respect local customs and communities.

  • Ask permission before taking photos of villagers.

  • Carry small gifts (school supplies, books, or food items) for village hosts.
